You can have a postpartum doula in your home for the first few days after birth, or visit regularly over the first few months, or doulas around the clock, depending on your needs and comfort level. Your doula can come for a half-day visit or full-day or overnight shifts. She can stay overnight with you in the hospital, and some are able to travel with your family if you’re going on a trip. The doulas adapt to fit the needs of your family. Most commonly, families hire a doula for 3–5-day shifts per week, 3-5 overnights per week, or a doula for each. We recommend at least 6 weeks of support whenever possible, but families schedule anywhere from 4 weeks to 4 months of support.

Once you have met with a doula that is right for your family, they will be on call and ready to provide services from the time you are (or your surrogate is) 37 weeks pregnant, or 34 weeks if you’re expecting multiples, and even if the baby or babies come sooner than expected, we’re adept at pooling our resources to cover some gaps until they can start the agreed upon schedule. If questions or concerns arise, either the owner or your doula will be available to you via phone or email throughout your pregnancy and postpartum. We have a network of local professionals if you need or desire other services and support.

We recommend you hire a doula four to six months in advance.
